5 Helpful Home-Brewed Stats on the Coffee Economy
Question: what is your best friend in the morning? Hopefully the answer was a quick and triumphant bellowing of, “COFFEE!” Yes, that caffeine-filled delicious perker-upper is humanity’s greatest invention and all-encompassing miracle worker. 150 million consumed coffee bags in 2016 drive this point home.
I ran a very non-scientific survey and came up with this stunning result: people care deeply about this caffeine-infused beverage. So why not learn more about it? Let’s do so by home-brewing some useful statistics on coffee and how it moves around the globe. If you’re ready to roast, then read along. Note: the following information is derived from data provided by the International Coffee Organization.
2: Types of Coffee Produced
Arabica & Robusta
- The majority of coffee produced in the world comes down to two types: Arabica and Robusta.
- Arabica beans mostly originate from Colombia and Brazil.
- Robusta beans hail from a multitude of smaller producers such as India, Vietnam and African nations.
- Which is produced more? Arabicas, due to having more product from highly-desired countries.
3: Crop Seasons for Coffee Exporters
April, July & October
- Crop production is staged during 3 annual time periods: April, July & October.
- Highest-producing season: October (52% of annual coffee production)
- Lowest-producing season: July (1% of annual coffee production)
- 56 countries produce and export within the industry.
4: Groups of Coffee Exported
Colombian Milds, Other Milds, Brazilian Naturals & Robustas
- Coffee types are grouped by country of origin.
- Arabicas consist of 3 groups: Colombian Milds, Other Milds & Brazilian Naturals.
- Robustas are classified together on their own.
- Highest-produced group: Robustas! They are cheaper and thus more cost-effective.
- Lowest-produced group: Colombian Milds. Their demand is higher due to quality, so they cost a pretty penny.
With these three useful statistics in place, let’s proceed by adding cream and sugar to top off our cup of joe.
7: Forms of Coffee
Green, Dried Cherry, Parchment, Roasted, Liquid, Soluble & Decaf
- The following definitions are courtesy of the International Coffee Organization Statistical Reports, Rules on Statistics, Page 1.
- Green Coffee: all coffee in the naked bean form before roasting
- Dried Coffee Cherry: the dried fruit of the coffee tree
- Parchment Coffee: the green coffee bean contained in the parchment skin
- Roasted Coffee: green coffee roasted to any degree and includes ground coffee
- Liquid Coffee: the water-soluble solids derived from roasted coffee and put into liquid form
- Soluble Coffee: the dried water-soluble solids derived from roasted coffee
- Decaffeinated Coffee: green, roasted or soluble coffee from which caffeine has been extracted
10: World Leaders in Coffee Exports
Brazil, Indonesia, Peru, Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Uganda & Vietnam
- Brazil is the world’s leading coffee producer and shipper, having exported 37 million bags of coffee in 2015-16.
- Rounding Out the “Top 5” are Vietnam, Columbia, India and Indonesia.
- Smallest Exporters: Paraguay, Congo, Benin, Guinea, Sri Lanka and Gabon each exported less than 1,000 bags.
